New Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi: "Tonight we made history 'n shit"

From her office… try to stay awake.

Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke early this morning on Democrats taking back the House of Representatives and their commitment to restore civility and bipartisanship to the House.  Below are Pelosi's remarks:

"Tonight is a great victory for the American people.

"Today, the American people voted for change, and they voted for Democrats to take our country in a New Direction.  And that is exactly what we intend to do.

"The American people voted for a New Direction to restore civility and bipartisanship in Washington, D.C.  Democrats promise to work together in a bipartisan way for all Americans.  The American people voted to restore integrity and honest in Washington, D.C.  And the Democrats intend to lead the most honest, most open, and most ethical Congress in history.

"The American people voted for a New Direction for a fairer economy.  Democrats intend to work for an economy where all Americans participate in the prosperity of our great country.

"And nowhere did the American people make it more clear that we need a New Direction than in the war in Iraq.  'Stay the course' has not made our country safer, has not honored our commitment to our troops, and has not made the region more stable.  We cannot continue on this catastrophic path.

"And so we say to the President: 'Mr. President, we need a New Direction in Iraq.  Let us work together to find a solution to the war in Iraq.'

"The campaign is over.  Democrats are ready to lead and prepared to govern.  We will work with Republicans in Congress and the Administration in the spirit of partnership, not partisanship.

"Today, all across America, in all regions of the country, North and South, East and West, Democrats, Independents and Republicans - Americans from all walks of life - voted to make this an historic day, to change the Congress and to change the country.

"Tonight, the American people have entrusted us with their hopes and aspirations, for themselves, their families, and their future.  We will honor that trust.

"Democrats share the faith and values that Americans uphold in their families and in their communities. We intend, working together, to build a future worthy of that faith, worthy of the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and worthy of the hopes and dreams that Americans have for our children.

"Tonight we have made history; now let us make progress."
